Melvin Thomas “Tommy” Vivian passed away at his residence Monday, July 6, 2020. He was the son of the late Virgil Vivian and Susie Kate Reddix and a lifelong resident of Montgomery Co. Tommy was born January 29, 1943 in Jeffersonville. He began his career as a laborer and retired as the owner of his own excavation company, Vivian Contractors. The result of his hard work is still visible around central Kentucky at places like Bluegrass Airport, the Man of War extension, the original Walmart shopping center in Mt. Sterling, Paris and Morehead, and the Sunset Ridge, Arlington and Val Hollow subdivisions. Tommy was an avid coon hunter who owned and trained numerous Grand Champion and Grand Night Champion Walker dogs. He also owned champion racking horses. He was a long-time member of the Jeffersonville Kennel Club, the United Kennel Club, The American Racking Horse Association. He also served for many years on the Reid Village Water Board.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he is survived by his wife Sharon Amburgey Vivian of Mt. Sterling, four children Michael Vivian (Monica) of Madisonville, KY, Tim Pace (Karen) of St. Peters, Missouri, Lynn Jettpace (Neal) of Jamestown, IN, and Rhonda Vivian of Mt. Sterling, along with the two grandchildren he raised , Kayleigh and Dawson Patrick both of Mt. Sterling; grandchildren Ethan and Will Vivian, Wiley and Alden Jettpace and Bethany Pace; great-grandchild Logan Knox, siblings Jimmy and Larry Vivian and Juanita Vandgriff of Mt. Sterling and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, siblings David, Gary, Virgil, Pauline, Virginia, Carl and Frances preceded him in death.
Services will be provided by Grayson Funeral Home in Clay City. Out of concern for the health of friends and loved ones, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at the Vivian Family Graveyard on Vivian Lane.
Tommy’s nephews and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
